BIBLICAL MEANING OF WATER
// Christian Dream Interpretation //
Is seeing water in dream is good or bad?
Water changes with the environment it is placed in. If under intense winds, it can become a destructive storm or if secluded in a remote mountainous area it becomes a tranquil sanctuary.
In our dreams it is no different. If the sky is dark and gloomy with a turbulent sea in the horizon, the water will personify the form of an ominous warning. Yet, if refreshed and lying beside still waters the principles for defining the prophetic meaning of water will take on the form of life and vitality.
For dreams, to define water properly you must place it in context of the mood and emotion of a dream. Below I illustrate this with a dream I had.
One night, I was having dream after dream about demons making me do a series of tests.
When I would fail or mess up they would torture me as my punishment. To say these dreams were demonic would be an understatement, but after the fourth or fifth one of these dreams I have another dream, but this time about water. In it I am standing in a line and we are all singing in chorus, "Oh Lord, baptize my soul." As we sang, one by one, we would walk up to my pastor who would then pull a lever, making water rain down on each person.
As I stepped up to him, I could feel the weight of the entire night of demonic encounters which had come against me. I felt heavy, dirty, and undeserving of even the song we were singing. But as the water poured over me
I became clean and every fear, doubt, and failure washed away.
When I awoke, I felt completely different. I went from heavy and terrified to feeling completely light and free. In my dream, water literally washed away all the nights' demonic activity—almost making me completely forget about the bad encounters I had just before this dream. The water represented and personified what Jesus paid for. The water literally transformed me and brought me into "Life abundantly" (John 10:10).
Water in dreams is amoral—meaning neither good or bad. Water is an object that is used by the one beholding and shaping it.
In the Bible, it's taken on the nature of storms or as metaphors for peace and salvation. Therefore, in our dreams it is no different. Take your dream and break it down and focus on the spirit behind it, not just the details and facts in it. The spirit will tell you much more about the meaning of the details then the details can about the spirit. If the emotion/spirit takes on more of the characteristics from Galatians 5, Fruit of the Spirit, then it is most likely good and God. But if the spirit is leading you to hopelessness and to do something sinful then you can easily attribute and define water or whatever other detail you are trying to define as being bad.
The goal here is not to get better at interpreting dreams but to get closer to God—thereby knowing and obeying His voice. Test the spirit and if it bears God's fruit, dig in. :)
Here are several other ways water is interpreted in the Bible:
In the Bible, crossing water is a powerful and repeated symbol of transition, transformation, deliverance, and divine intervention. Here are the key meanings associated with this imagery:
1. Deliverance from Bondage
Example: The Red Sea (Exodus 14)
When Moses led the Israelites through the Red Sea, it symbolized God delivering them from slavery in Egypt. The water became a barrier between bondage and freedom, death and life.
Symbolism:
Deliverance from sin, rescue from oppression, and a miraculous new beginning.
2. Faith and Obedience in Transition
Example: Crossing the Jordan River (Joshua 3)
When Israel crossed the Jordan into the Promised Land, it marked the end of their wilderness journey and the beginning of living in God's promise.
Symbolism:
Stepping into your destiny, transition through obedience, and the fulfillment of God’s promises.
3. Death and Resurrection
Example: Baptism (Romans 6:4)
Crossing water is echoed in Christian baptism—being buried in water and rising to new life in Christ.
Symbolism:
Death to the old life and resurrection into new life through Jesus.
4. Testing and Transformation
Example: Jesus walking on water (Matthew 14:22–33)
Water was chaotic and dangerous in the ancient mind. Jesus walking on water—and calling Peter to do the same—shows mastery over chaos and invites faith over fear.
Symbolism:
Trust in God during trials, stepping out in faith, and victory over fear and uncertainty.
5. Separation and Sanctification
Crossing water often marks a clear “before and after” moment—separating God’s people from their old identity and preparing them for a new purpose.
Water crossings in Scripture are never just about geography—they're about transformation. God uses the crossing to shape identity, build faith, and display His power.
