Snakes and Serpents Prophetic Meaning

Ninety percent of the time, snakes will insinuate something devilish and dark, yet that is not the whole story!

In Genesis chapter one, God looks over all His creation and, with adoration, calls it "good." Then, in Exodus 7, of all the creatures and animals God could have made Moses' staff become, He chose the serpent. In Numbers 21, God instructed Moses to create a "bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived."

Therefore, to always associate snakes and serpents with the demonic or devilish forces would be irresponsible ... yet, sadly, this is how I usually see them portrayed in dream blogs and dream interpretive guides.

Even in nature, snakes add massive value to whatever ecosystem they abide in. Without them, diseased rodents and other small insects would run rampant. They promote biodiversity, and some ecosystem's survival are dependent on the existence of our slithering friends. Not to mention, their venom has saved the lives of millions of people every year. Venom from snakes is used to treat many serious health ailments like cancers, heart & stroke disease, Parkinson's, and many more—they save more lives than they take.

I wanted to begin this article by focusing on snakes' benefit because I believe most anyone could define the dark side of their existence.

But just in case, I'll give you some of the more common things you might hear as well. Not even mentioning the forefather of the demonic, snakes have been used for thousands of years in the occult and in representing fear and lust. They creep in the dark and sneak up on defenseless prey that rarely sees them coming. Some of them are the most venomous creatures globally, claiming tens-of-thousands of lives worldwide every year.

In the Bible, I mentioned a few positive verses initially, but you would also find them associated with the wicked, the deceitful, the cunning, and even Satan himself. The first account of a snake in the Bible is in humanity's deception, and the last account is of the great dragon, Satan.

So, if you have snakes in your dream, CONTEXT IS KEY

Overall, if the dream's emotional state is fearful, dark, and gloomy, it would be safe to say their representation would lean toward the darker side, as defined above. However, if your dream is lively, colorful, and the message follows the Bible and the fruit of His Spirit, I could easily associate your little messengers as being heavenly.

Either way, the important thing is not to put God's creation in a box. That's what your discernment is for, to discern between good and evil. In this process of learning the prophetic meaning of symbols and signs, whether you get it all right or wrong doesn't matter as much as staying in peace. Remember, in Luke 10, Jesus reminds us, "Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy and nothing will injure you."

No matter how the serpent is portrayed in your dream, even if the facts of your failure and fear are actual, you should never slip into fear! In Christ, we have authority over all the demonic, and no matter your mistakes, in Christ, we have victory.

WANT A DEEPER SUMMARY of SNAKES IN THE BIBLE

Snakes (or serpents) are deeply symbolic in the Bible, often representing opposing forces like evil and deception, but also healing, wisdom, and judgment, depending on the context. Here's a detailed look at how snakes are portrayed throughout Scripture:

1. The Serpent in the Garden (Genesis 3)
Symbol of deception and rebellion
The most famous biblical snake appears in the Garden of Eden:
“Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field…” (Genesis 3:1)
The serpent tempts Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, introducing sin and death into the human story.
Later in Revelation, this serpent is identified as Satan himself (Revelation 12:9).

Key Theme: The serpent here represents the beginning of mankind’s fall through deceit and rebellion.

2. Moses and the Bronze Serpent (Numbers 21:4–9)
Symbol of healing and deliverance
When the Israelites complain against God, they are punished with venomous snakes. But God tells Moses to make a bronze serpent and set it on a pole:
“Anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” (v. 8)
Jesus later compares this to His own crucifixion:
“Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up...” (John 3:14–15)

Key Theme: The serpent becomes a symbol of God’s mercy and salvation, foreshadowing Christ.

3. Wise as Serpents (Matthew 10:16)
Symbol of wisdom and discernment
Jesus tells His disciples:
“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.”
Here, the serpent’s cunning is actually commended—but balanced with innocence.

Key Theme: Godly wisdom requires shrewdness without corruption.

4. The Dragon (Revelation 12, 20)
Symbol of Satan’s final form
In Revelation, the serpent reappears as a dragon—a great, ancient enemy:
“That old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceives the whole world...” (Revelation 12:9)

Key Theme: The serpent represents Satan's long-standing opposition to God and His people.

5. Snakes as Instruments of God’s Judgment
Snakes are also used as agents of divine judgment or miracles:
Moses’ staff becomes a serpent before Pharaoh (Exodus 7:10–12)
God sends fiery serpents to punish Israel (Numbers 21)
Paul shakes a viper off his hand unharmed (Acts 28:3–5), showing divine protection

Key Theme: Snakes serve God’s purposes—both to judge and to display His power.

Summary: Dual Symbolism

Deception Satan in the Garden (Genesis 3)
Judgment Fiery serpents in the wilderness (Numbers 21)
Healing Bronze serpent (Numbers 21; John 3:14)
Wisdom Jesus’ instruction to disciples (Matthew 10:16)
Enemy/Dragon Satan in Revelation (Revelation 12)
